What AP Chemistry students actually get stuck on
After ten years of teaching, the failure points are predictable. Almost every student who is struggling in AP Chemistry is stuck on one of these:
- Mole reasoning that never became automatic. The student can define a mole but cannot fluently move between grams, moles, particles and litres under time pressure. Every stoichiometry problem then costs three times as long as it should.
- Equilibrium treated as a formula instead of a system. ICE tables get filled in mechanically without any sense of which way the system will shift or why.
- Thermodynamics vocabulary confusion. Enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs free energy get memorised as three equations rather than one argument about whether a process happens.
- Acid–base problems solved by pattern-matching. Works on homework, collapses on an exam that varies the setup.
- FRQ answers that are correct but score badly. The chemistry is right; the justification the rubric wants is missing.

Scoring the free-response section, not just answering it
The AP Chemistry free-response section is graded against a rubric, and the rubric rewards visible reasoning. A student who writes the right number with no supporting argument routinely scores below a student whose arithmetic slipped but whose logic is laid out. Sessions include timed FRQ practice marked the way a reader would mark it, with the specific feedback of this sentence would have earned the point.

Starting late is still worth it. Students who begin in March cannot cover everything, so the plan changes shape: identify the units where marks are cheapest to recover, drill exam technique, and stop trying to be complete.
The AP semester group class
Alongside one-on-one work, Dr. Sahota runs an AP Chemistry group class that meets for 90 minutes once a week through the semester, tracking the school AP course unit by unit. Batches are capped at four students — smaller than the Honors batches — because AP moves quickly and free-response answers have to be marked one at a time to teach anything. It is $110 per student per session, roughly $73 an hour of teaching.
The group format suits an AP student who is keeping up and aiming at a 4 or 5 and wants structured weekly problem work all year. A student who is currently failing AP should start one-on-one instead; a group cannot pause for one student to rebuild stoichiometry while the other three wait.

How many hours of AP Chemistry tutoring does a student need?
It depends entirely on the starting point. A student holding a B who wants a 5 often needs one hour a week from January.
